The Urban Ministry Institute of Los Angeles offers three study programs:
1) Certificate in Christian Leadership Studies
2) Certificate in Urban Theological Studies
3) Ministerial Studies Diploma.
Certificate in Christian Leadership Studies (32 credits)
Our certificate in Christian Leadership Studies is awarded to students who complete all 16 modules of the Capstone Curriculum. It is designed to equip lay leaders, pastoral candidates and urban missionaries with foundational theological truths as well as basic study and ministry skills.
Certificate in Urban Theological Studies (32 credits)
Our certificate in Urban Theological Studies can be earned by completing eight credits in each of the four subject areas offered by TUMI-LA (Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry and Urban Mission). These credits can be earned from any of our four curriculums: Capstone Curriculum, Foundations for Ministry Series, Upper Room Workshops or Satellite Design Courses. As with the certificate in Christian Leadership Studies, this study program is designed to equip lay leaders, pastoral candidates and urban missionaries with foundational theological truths as well as basic study and ministry skills.
Ministerial Studies Diploma (64 credits)
After completing either the Certificate in Christian Leadership Studies or the Certificate in Urban Theological Studies, a student may complete an additional 32 credits, eight credits in each of the four subject areas (Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry and Urban Mission) in order to receive a diploma in Ministerial Studies. These credits can be earned from any of our four curriculums: Capstone Curriculum, Foundations for Ministry Series, Upper Room Workshops or Satellite Design Courses. The first course to be taken in this program is the Ministry Assessment Course, which helps the student assess his/her gifts, calling and on- going direction in ministry. The Ministerial Studies Diploma is designed to equip lay leaders, pastoral candidates and urban missionaries with the Biblical, theological and leadership skills necessary for informed urban ministry. For some, this diploma may form the basis for licensing or ordination by the candidate's church or mission organization.
Church Planting Certification
This certificate can be earned by completing the School of Church Planting. The purpose of this school is to equip church plant teams who intend to plant indigenously-led churches among America's urban poor. Special qualifications must be met to participate in this certificate program. Please contact the TUMI office for more information.
An Urban Focus
Although we offer courses in Urban Mission as a formal part of our program, it is our commitment to prepare all the classes we teach in light of the needs of urban ministry. We believe that the rapid growth of cities around the world presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the church of Jesus Christ. Therefore, each course given by The Urban Ministry Institute will include content that is important to people who minister in the cities.
Four Course Areas
We offer courses in four departments of ministry education: Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry and Urban Mission. We believe that urban ministers need a working knowledge of all four disciplines. Therefore, our certificate and diploma programs are designed to give students a balanced exposure to each of these subject areas.
Biblical Studies courses are designed to increase the student's knowledge of Scripture and provide skills for studying, interpreting and communicating the Word of God.
Theology and Ethics courses are designed to help students understand "historic orthodoxy," to integrate the themes of Scripture and to apply those teachings to the world today.
Christian Ministry courses emphasize training for becoming an effective leader and disciple-maker in the urban church and provide "how-to" skills necessary for pastors, teachers and church-workers.
Urban Mission courses help students understand missiological principles for church planting and development work in urban centers.
